I got my show ticket signed and took some photos of her, then went across the Muskingum River to eat and came back over the bridge to the Chatterbox Tavern, which is across the street from the Twin City Opera House. A line formed outside on the sidewalk, and showgoers paraded past her table to collect her signature.

When she mentioned her southern Ohio roots at the show, people started yelling out towns in that region which she said she is familiar with, such as Marietta, Dexter City and Germantown. Smith began singing professionally in 1964 when “Once A Day” was released. Whispering Bill Anderson, one of my all-time favorite country singers, wrote “Once A Day.”Īlthough born in Elkhart, Ind., Smith spent a lot of her youth around Dungannon, Ohio (Columbiana County) and in southern Ohio. Most readers who grew up in that era and were country music fans probably remember “Once A Day” as her biggest hit.īut at the McConnelsville show, she also performed hits such as “Cincinnati, Ohio,” “Ribbon of Darkness,” “Nobody But a Fool” and a couple of gospel tunes. Smith sang several of her monster hits from the 1960s and ’70s. Daniels and Smith performed a couple of solo tunes. Her band - the Sundowners - is comprised of Jack Daniels (lead guitarist), Gary Carter (steel guitarist), Kenny Smith (drummer) and Rod Hamm (bass guitarist). It was erected in 1890-91, and opened to the public in 1892. The headliner of the show was Country Music Hall of Famer and Grand Ole Opry star Connie Smith.Įver since I first saw it in 2008, I’ve considered the Twin City Opera House one of my favorite buildings in Ohio.
Ever since I found out about it 10 years ago, I wanted to see an Ohio Valley Opry show at the Twin City Opera House in downtown McConnelsville (Morgan County), about 26 miles south of Zanesville.ĭuring my mid-September vacation week, I finally got to do that, and it was an enjoyable experience.
